How to be Great Racing Crew

Everyone wants to great racing crew – so how do get in that zone?

Firstly, every crew is a important part of a team and team players are highly sought after.

Come with the right attitude:

“You just don’t need a hundred grand of North 3Di Raw sails, titanium deck fittings and a gold medal to race a yacht. What you need is people with the right attitude and an open mind. And that means there is room for crew of all sorts in a race team”

Reliability and Consistency:

Building a great team requires patience and practice. Team leaders and skippers put in a lot of time and effort and having crew swap in and out every week means retweaking roles and responsibilities hindering team cohesion and development. Skippers look for reliability, every week, every practice, rain or shine. Crews that show up all the time are better than the unpredictable appearance of a rock star.

New to Racing:

Make the effort to learn about the basics. What is the race course, the fundamentals of sailing, boat handling basics are always helpful stepping stones to success. Teammates are often eager to share their knowledge but don’t expect to be spoonfed. Be proactive about learning new things.
