Programs
At ONE15 Brooklyn Sail Club we offer a variety of sailing programs to meet the needs of our Club members.
The Fleet Captain Program
This is the backbone program at the Sail Club. Experienced members of the club (Fleet Captains) volunteer their time to take out and educate other members of the club. Fleet Captains are the most valuable asset of the club members should always be generously thanked. Fleet Captains and crew are assigned to boats on a random basis. Crew members are expected to contribute to any charges the Fleet Captain may incur.
Fleet Captain Cruising: Crew members sign up on the online reservation system and a Fleet Captain will volunteer to take members out on the water. They are tasked with imparting knowledge and skills that is part of our Skipper Certification Test. This way sail is fun and educational.
Fleet Captain Racing: Similar to the cruising program. See Club Racing.
Obtain skipper privileges and take out the club boats on your own.
Members with skipper privileges are entrusted to take our other members and guests with Club boats. Our Fleet Captains and Fleet Captain Program provide informal training that supplements our Learn-to-Skipper Program. Sign up for Learn-to-Skipper courses (Module 1 is mandatory), prepare yourself with our Fleet Captain sails, and then challenge the test.
Winter Wednesdays
Over the winter season, we have events to bring our members together to share experiences and learn new skills. Weather forecasting, knot tying, cruising in Greece, racing rules, membership information.
Private Sails
Regular members and members with skipper privileges can connect and self organize their own sailing trips. Skippers reserve the boat and co-ordinate the arrangement. Crews can include other members and non members (subject to a guest fee).
The club supports an informal program to connect members who are available to sail during the weekday. Monday-Friday 9-5:30. Connect with other Weekday Sailors and get out on the water while everyone else is busy!
Bareboat Cruising
Let’s escape the city and sail the world! The organizes charter trips in the winter that are open to members and non members. The British Virgin Islands are a favorite spot. Members also organize their own trips around the world. Keep checking the member news and events.
Volunteers
We’re always looking for volunteers to help out the club. Currently we need Instructor affiliates, race committee volunteers, Community Sail Away crew, club social committees & social media assistants.
Community Sail Away
Our club works with selected non-profits where club members (skipper and crew) take out guests on a short cruise (usually Sunday mornings). Many of our guests have never experienced sailing or been on the water in NY Harbor. We salute all our members who volunteer for this service.
Club Racing
We use the racing program as an educational tool. Competitive club races every Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Member form their own teams and once confirmed, racing fees are additional (see any Notices of Race).
Fleet Captain Racing: Some sailing time slots are dedicated to Fleet Captain racing – a more casual racing atmosphere where racing skippers and crew are assigned to teams (by senior members) for the that session to balance out skills levels. This program is ideal for those learning to race and those unable to participate in the evening program on a regular basis.
Other ways to get involved in racing is to volunteer for Race Committee on the race evenings or weekend racing. Watch and learn from a different perspective.
