Spring Time Sailing

Spring time is in the air.  Everyone is eager to get our sailing. Here are few things tips and reminders.

Wear your PFD. In the spring time local water temperatures are in the range of 40°F to 50°F. Hypothermia sets in around 30 minutes so wearing PFDs are a must in the Spring. Club rules require it all the times but don’t be lax when sailing elsewhere.

Personal PFDs. Check your equipment. Manually check all straps and coverings. If your PFD has lights – double check their batteries. Automatic PFDs should be serviced as required and manually inflate the bladders to check for leaks.

Sailing Shoes. If you stored them in the off season, check to make sure the soles have not been worn down and you don’t have any uninvited critters squatting inside your shoes.

Gloves. Most gloves don’t last more than one sailing season. It might be time to replace your gloves or at least get a second pair. With two pairs, one pair can be rinsed and drying while the other pair is in use.

Sunglasses. Check your safety straps and retighten those pesky screws holding the arms and nose pieces.

Hats. Wear a hat to reduce heat loss in the wind and the occasional shower.

Foul Weather Gear. Check your clothing for rips and tears. Now is good time to check out everything to make sure you’ll be kept toasty and dry.

Rigging Knives and Multitools –  Time to sharpen blades, lubricate hinges and check out the tethers and safety lines. Bring some electrical or bandage tape for emergencies on the boat.

That’s all folks.
